Baby Princess Leah, Sick In The Hospital, Receives Support From Star Wars Community

Zev and Frani Esquenazi are well known in the “Star Wars” fan community for their prop and costume recreations. Recently, they’ve had to scale back their careers in the video game industry to care for their four-month-old daughter Leah, who suffers from a mysterious illness. The illness produces seizure-like dystonic movements throughout her body, and is so perplexing, a 40-doctor team has been assigned to study and care for her. She has spent most of her life in the hospital.

Since neither parent can work while caring for Leah, they reached out to the “Star Wars” fan community for help. Actors Peter Mayhew (who played Chewbacca) and David Prouse (who played Darth Vader), along with hundreds of fans, responded. So far, they have raised $17,000 on behalf of the family. The donations help the Esquenazi family, but are also used to help find a cure and raise awareness about Leah’s condition.
