Senior pets to find ‘forever homes’ this Make A Difference Day

After reading about “Make a Difference Day, Judi Leonard decided she wanted to do something for older animals. She knew many older cats and dogs were in need of good homes, but were unlikely to be adopted due to their age. She shared her desire with the Humane Society and met long-time volunteer Jan Stevenson. Together, they launched “Seniors 4 Seniors,” a project featuring fundraisers and adoption events with the goal of finding homes for these older pets.

“Our mission is to find ‘forever homes’ for the older pets by pairing them with the young at heart for companionship and unconditional love,” Stevenson says. “From my standpoint, the biggest impact is help the public realize how adoptable senior animals are and how enriching they can be to a senior person’s life.”

Blind cat returns home after owner’s year-long Internet search to find missing pet

Karen Hansen lost Sammie, her three-year-old gray and white cat, in October 2010. She searched for a year, putting up posters, and posting Sammie’s picture all over the internet. Last Sunday, Hansen received a call from a woman in Borough Park, Brooklyn who believed Sammie was in the pack of strays she fed regularly. The woman came across Sammie’s picture, while searching the internet for homes for the stray cats.

Hansen was skeptical at first. Her last few tips had ended in disappointment. But, she says, when she got out of the car, the first thing she said was “That’s Sammie.”

“It was amazing. My face hurt from smiling,” she said.

Firefighters Help Rescue Westport Cat From Storm Drain

Firefighters in Westport, Conn. responded to a call about a cat that had fallen into a storm drain this morning. Dick Fincher, the cat’s owner, met the firefighters and directed them to the storm drain in front of his house. He said the cat, named Nip, had somehow found a way into the drain, but was unable to get back out. Firefighters removed the grate, but the frightened Nip stayed inside the pipe.

It was a combination of a can of food placed by the pipe entrance and Fincher’s voice that coaxed the cat to come near. Firefighters then held Fincher by the waist as he reached in a pulled Nip out. Assistant Chief Robert Kepchar says both Fincher and Nip were very happy to be reunited.

A third of cats taken from Great Falls hoarder adopted so far

Officers seized 95 cats from the mobile home of Sherry Bickel on Sept. 13 and relinquished them to the Great Falls Animal Shelter for adoption. After a routine medical exam, 60 of the cats were deemed healthy enough to be adopted. To speed up the process, the shelter lowered the adoption fee for cats from $240 down to $40, waving the usual $200 spay/neuter fee.

Within 10 days, the shelter saw a massive increase in visitors wanting to adopt. Over a third of the seized cats found new homes, and the interest in the cats has gotten people to adopt other animals from the shelter as well. Shelter Director Jamie Bennett says that while over 40 of the cats still remain at the shelter, 21 adoptions in 10 days is pretty awesome.

“They’re surprised how well adjusted (the cats) are, and how nice and friendly they are,” she said.

Trainspotting Cat Waits Daily for Owner at Trainstop

Graeme, or “Train Cat” as he is now called, has become famous in his hometown of Melbourne, Australia for dropping off and picking up his owner at the train station every day. Each morning, Graeme leaves home and accompanies Nichole Weinrich to the platform and returns to the station when she comes back. While there, he can usually be seen sunning himself nearby and being pet by other travelers. One man describes Graeme as regal and aloof, “but in a nice way.”

“He always seems to know which train carriage I am on and will be sitting there behind the yellow line when the doors open… because he is all about safety,” Weinrich said.

Arthritic cat is on top of the world after owners build him a spiral staircase to get over garden fence

When Tom, a ginger tabby cat, developed arthritis, his owners, Adrienne Ellery and Gareth Bowen, were worried he wouldn’t get enough exercise. Bowen saw Tom struggle to climb the fence he uses to get around the neighborhood. Some days, he would make it, but would still face an eight-foot jump upon returning home. Bowen decided to build Tom a staircase. Ellery thought he was crazy.

At first, Tom didn’t know what to make of the new device. Ellery put some food on each step to entice him up. Soon, Tom was walking up the steps like he’d been doing it all his life.

“It’s great because it means he’s not stuck in the house and can be sociable with the other local cats,” said Bowen.

“When Gareth told me what he wanted to do I was astonished and thought he was a bit mad,” said Ellery. “But it’s made all the difference to the cat. It means he can get around the neighbourhood and as he’s getting older it’s important for his quality of life.”
