High School Students Build A Farmer’s Market In A Food Desert
Bertie County, N.C. is the poorest county in the state. Although it’s an agricultural economy, most residents are obese and have no access to fresh grown food. Emily Pilloton works with Studio H, a design/build program in the local high school. She and a class of high school students designed and built a farmer’s market pavilion for the area. The project took over a year to complete. None of the students had any designing or building experience, and some had never used a hammer.
Pilloton started with the basics, teaching them math and how to use the shop tools. Students received college credits a summer salary for their work in building the 2,000 square foot pavilion. Pilloton says the idea for the project came from the community. Previously, Studio H has built chicken coops that were given away to families after a flood destroyed their town. Pilloton isn’t sure what the next project will be.
“I want it to come from the students,” she says. “I want to help them find something that they’re going to be passionate about.”

I went ice skating with my youth group, and was actually doing pretty well. A woman on the ice noticed and showed me how to skate backwards so I could have something more challenging to learn. I fell a lot at first and I have huge bruises, but learning something new mmd!

I was feeling down about some stupid ex of mine, and one day I was logging on to my yahoo email and an advert came up for durex condoms reading: playtime for adults, and my gran looked over my shoulder, not understanding the concept and asked me: what about playtime for pensioners? IMMD!

The Thespian troupe at my school cleans up after every home football game. Needless to say, this can be gross, but after homecoming (the worst) a little girl came out of nowhere and helped me pick up pistachio shells. Someone asked me if she was my sister…I didn't think of the perfect response until afterwards, but here it is: "No, but I'd be proud of her if she was." Her generosity made my day.
