Minnesota High School Runner Josh Ripley Called Hero After Helping Competitor

Josh Ripley, a runner for Andover High School in Minneapolis, was competing with 260 other runners in a 5-K race when he noticed an injured competitor named Mark Paulauskas. Most of the other runners passed by, either not noticing Mark, or planning to summon help once they reached to coaches further down the track. As Josh passed by, he saw Mark sitting against the fence, holding his bleeding ankle. Assuring Mark that everything would be okay, Josh picked him up and ran.

“I am waiting for all my kids to go running by, and there is no Josh, no Josh,” his coach, Scott Clark, said. “I was wondering, ‘What was going on? Why was he so far back? Then I see Josh. … He’s got the kid in his arms, like you would carry a youngster.”

Mark ended up finishing in 211th place, but was greeted at the finish line by Mark’s coach and team mates all thanking him for what he did. Mark was taken to the emergency room where doctors determined the injury to be caused by another runner’s shoe. They gave him 20 stitches and a walking boot. Josh hopes to enroll in an Army or Marines R.O.T.C. program in college and was honored at a local school board meeting this week.

“I really feel I just did the right thing,” he said. “Any of my teammates would have done the same thing. It wasn’t an act of heroism. It was an act of kindness that I know I needed to accomplish.”

Mary’s Little Moment of Win

Sep. 29, 2011

As I walked past my neighbor's house, I told him that I always love seeing his garden. With a thick Portuguese accent he said, "Next time you walk by, I give you a flower!" I thought he was just being sweet, but when I passed it coming home he snapped off a big pink rose and immd!

Alison’s Little Moment of Win

Sep. 29, 2011

I recently moved with my parents to a small town, leaving behind a great job I really loved. After two months of fruitless searching, I got three calls for interviews in one day! Before lunchtime, I'd been offered a job that pays even more than the one I'd left behind! IMMD!!

learningtodrive’s Little Moment of Win

funny win story - learningtodrive's Little Moment of Win

My dad took me to our church where the parking lot is huge and always empty except when there's events. He pulled over and he gave me the keys. I had just gotten my permit and he had been sick earlier in the week. He taught me to drive and I did really good (or so he said). I don't see him a lot because of his job and marching band, so having him teach me how to drive really MMW.

Anonymous donor gives a dog and family a second chance

The Gessner family has had it rough lately. Their 22-year-old son went through chemotherapy after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and Jack, their 12-year-old son, was diagnosed with severe anxiety disorder. To help Jack with his condition, the family decided to adopt a dog. The dog was named Chase. He was perfect for the family, and a great help to Jack.

Then Chase was diagnosed with cancer. Unable to pay the medical bills, Christy Gessner, reached out to the Humane Society where they adopted Chase a few weeks earlier. The next day, the Humane Society called back. An anonymous donor had offered to pay for Chase’s treatment. Jack accompanies Chase to every treatment. The vet says that since they caught the tumor early, Chase should have a 100 percent recovery.

“I think he’s a pretty brave dog,” Jack said.
