Long distance runner Patrick Finney completed the Bellingham Bay Marathon in Wash. on Sunday, making him the first person with multiple sclerosis to complete a marathon in all 50 states. Though strong winds made the run difficult, and Finney felt queasy towards the end, he quickly recovered to celebrate with a group of nearly 30 friends from his home state of Texas.
When he was first diagnosed with MS in 1998, his MRI’s were consistent with “someone who should be in a wheelchair.” Doctors told him to take his medicine and take it easy, but Finney refused. He returned to a regimen of moderate running. By 2004, the disease had rendered him unable to walk. Through extensive rehabilitation and therapy, he slowly began to regain his ability to balance, walk, and eventually run. In 2005, he decided to run a half-marathon to see if he could finish. He did.
He ran his first full marathon the following year and finished that as well. A friend challenged him to run one in all 50 states by his 50th birthday. He had to accept. When he crossed the final finish line last Sunday, he was just a couple weeks past his 48th birthday.
“I have gotten to travel to a lot of new places and meet a lot of great people,” he said. “It’s been a wonderful experience.”
