Homeless pair form nonprofit to aid others on the street

A year ago, homeless man Brad Carter was sick of never having a place to slow down, or having a chance to prove himself on a job. He and his friend Jon Pichardo, also homeless, launched HOME, a non-profit agency they hope will help not only them, but hundreds of others in Daytona Beach. HOME, Homeless and Others for a Meaningful Exchange, helps homeless people find jobs, shelter and permanent housing, and also works to improve public perception of homeless people.

What sets it apart from similar organizations is that, like its founders, 80 percent of its members are homeless. Some people on the streets are afraid of social services and government. Being in the same situation as those they are trying to help makes it easier for HOME to reach them and build a sense of trust.

“It’s important to me to see my brothers and sisters get off the streets,” said one member.

Charity of the Week: Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society

Jun. 29, 2011

funny win story - Charity of the Week: Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society

Seeing people helping others always makes our day. That’s why each week, we’ll feature a different charity or organization either doing good work, or maybe in need of a little help. This week: the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society.

In Los Alamos County in New Mexico, a mandatory evacuation order has been issued due to spreading wildfires. As a result, the Santa Fe Animal Shelter is experiencing a massive influx of dogs, cats, and other pets. They are looking for people in their community who are able to help store a large variety of animals as well as donations of food, supplies or money to help recover costs.

If you would like to help out, visit sfhumanesociety.org for more information.

Books MMD!

I went to the relay for life and came to a stall selling books. They had a whole collection of Dear Americas. I mentioned I loved them but only got 2 because I only had a dollar. The lady then asked me if I owned the others and when I said no, told me I could take the whole box home. Getting 18 precious connections to my childhood made my Year!

Endangered Puerto Rican parrot on the rise

The Puerto Rican parrot has hovered near extinction for decades. In pre-colonial times, there were around one million of the birds in Puerto Rico. Now, their numbers have been greatly diminished due to massive clearing of forests and a series of devastating hurricanes. Captive breeding efforts started in the 1970s but were initially unsuccessful. Scientists thought the bird would go extinct.

As they learned more about the parrots, and breeding centers got more resources to care for injured birds, results started to improve. Now, the El Yunque National Forest and the Rio Abajo Nature preserve are both home to small, but growing populations. In fact, both centers boasted a record year in newly hatched chicks – about 40 each.

Because of this success, officials are looking to start other wild populations across Puerto Rico. They hope to one day have populations be able to intermingle, but as of yet have no specific target number. One Fish and Wildlife biologist explained their philosophy as “the more the better.”
