Walking down the sidewalk, I heard the woman coming toward me singing “My Favorite Things” to her small daughter. The child was rolling her eyes at the old tune she’d never heard. As they passed me, I picked up the song where the mother had left off, singing the next line without skipping a beat. The girl’s eyes grew wide and her jaw dropped, as her mother said “See?” IMMD

EPIC WIN! XD (<-Still Laughing my ass off) You totally just MMD!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
as if one of the most covered songs ever could grow old
And you likely Made Mom’s Day too!
I had a sad, but now I’m singing “My Favorite Things” and it went away.
Time to rent “The Sound of Music” and watch it with the daughter
I suggest the Sing-a-Long version, with the song lyrics in subtitles.
Oh, that’s just WONDERFUL! I’m so glad you posted that story!
I was almost afraid to click on “comments” cuz I didn’t want to see anything snarky about this WIN!!
(so far so good)
Very cool!
I have a feeling the girls reaction was exaggerated a little…
When you’re five, the world is MAGIC. Having seen my older child have similar reactions, I totally believe it.
If I ever have kids they’re damn well going to appreciate the epic win that is The Sound of Music. Or I will sell them on eBay.
Same here. Forget the crap like Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga. They will be raised on the good stuff. Sound of Music. Grease. Mel Brooks’ movies. Marx Brothers. Classic Disney films (anything before 2000). The Breakfast Club. The Godfather (when they’re older). The Beatles. The Eagles. Led Zeppelin. Grateful Dead. The Doors. Boston. Yes. Journey. Pink Floyd. Yes, I would include the movie “The Wall”, but only when they’re older.
I’m with you, Patrick. I’m proud to say that my son, although he got into metal growing up, never forgot the classics. And my 22 year old nephew can play an instrumental of Blackbird on his guitar that would make you gently weep.
I completely agree with you except for that second sentence.
Radiohead, Bryan Adams, Casablanca, The Beach Brothers, The Sex Pistol, The Clash, Minor Threat, The Cure, The Smiths, Nirvana, The Pixies, Oasis. Am I right or am I right?
The Smiths and Nirvana are both essential parts of the upbringing of a child.
I’ve got to say, Rock Band and Guitar Hero have done WONDERS for my kids’ tastes in music.
Hey, Lilo and Stitch is a modern classic, as is basically all of Pixar. Most of that is post 2000.
Our six-year-old recognizes and requests Godzilla by Blue Oyster Cult, Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple, Black Dog by Led Zeppelin, as well as most anything by the Red Hot Chili Peppers or Ok Go. He used to ask us to loop “Here it Goes” in the car when he was sleepy.
Our two-year-old falls asleep to lullabye versions of Cure songs. Someday, he’ll be on a date, and the muzak in the restaurant will start playing Just Like Heaven, and his date will say “What’s wrong? Am I boring you?” as he starts to feel unaccountably sleepy.
You. Rock.
I wish it is possible to favorite moments of win. This was and inspiring post.
…and pistols and rifle and shotguns and chainsaw, these are a few of my favorite things!
For surviving a zombie attack.
When I was little, I always thought that my dad had created that song. I was shocked when I was eleven and watched “The Sound of Music” for the first time!
Slightly off topic: When April 1st fell on a Sunday, a church secretary added this verse to the psalm of the day:
“The hills are alive with the sound of music;
The songs they have sung for a thousand years.”
(Some of the congregation got it; others didn’t.) A nice, harmless prank!
That is AWESOME =D ! That secretary deserves an internet.
And the most interesting thing is that when she first sang the song, Maria was a nun =P .
MY favorite IMMD ever! that is to cool
Seemom.
