I was returning my rental car when the man behind the counter got a phone call. He did what one would expect – identified himself and stated the name of the rental company. But the actual words out of his mouth were "Enterprise, this is Jim," and as a Star Trek nerd it TOTALLY made my day.

Really, it should’ve been “Enterprise, this is Nyota” — Kirk didn’t usually answer the phone.
I am ALSO a huge Star Trek nerd.
He answers the communicator while on planet though.
Pretty sure he would have said “this is Kirk” rather than Jim… it’s only usually Bones calls him that
Though that’s still entirely possible, given the number of boys with that name.
(Nyota? … a vague memory returns – is that Uhura’s first name? Again she’d probably answer with her surname instead, or just talk on behalf of the enterprise as a whole)

Nyota is the name that Star Trek XI gave her. Before that, there was no Canon first name for her. Fans (and I believe the non-Canon Expanded Universe) gave her many names and Nyota was the most popular. Thus that was the name she was given for STXI.

my prof’s name is Jim, and I had reason to go “Dammit, Jim!” at him a couple weeks ago ’cause he was making us read more than orginally, and I had a giggle fit
