It Made My Day

Today, I heard that if you put earphones in your nose, the sound comes out of your mouth. Applying the same principle, I put my earphones in my trombone. It was LOUD! I’m never using speakers again! IMMD

I call BS. I believe you can hear it a little better, but you can’t make power out of nothing. A trombone would only serve to refocus the sound waves coming out of your earphones, not amplify them.

true enough, but focusing sound can make a big difference. have you seen — and heard — one of these things in action before?

    • tahrey says:

Resonance is a powerful thing – those old phonographs with the big horns got listenable sound out of the tiny vibrations of a steel needle without any electrical input.

It’ll sound like crap, and there’s a upper limit on what you can reasonably achieve, but it can get louder just through reinforcement and reverb.

“Never using speakers again” is probably a bit of a big ask :D

Everyone who just stuck your earbuds up your nose, you just got PUNKED! Earboogers FTL!

  3. blastvortex says:

Simple projection doesn’t necessarily outweigh the benefits of amplification, but if it works, it works. (If the speakers you were using were non-powered, there wouldn’t be much of a difference anyway.)

On another note, considering how brass instruments work, I wouldn’t do it though — call me crazy if you like, but getting spit on something that you stick in your ears doesn’t really appeal to me. If you don’t mind giving yourself wet willies though, go right ahead. *shrug*

  4. FHL says:

Note to self: don’t borrow lex’s earphones.

    Now about that spit valve…

  6. Nemo! says:

After reading this, I applied the same thing to my tuba. I took out the mouthpiece and stuck my earphones in the lead pipe. I’m not using my tuba as speakers. xD Your epic WIN has led to another epic WIN. Go you! *high-fives*

  7. Abby says:

I have an iPod and a trombone so I just tried it. If you hold the earbud to the where the mouthpiece would go sound does come out of the bell. It seemed louder at first, but I figured out it was because I was holding the bell closer to my head than the earbud. It does make the sound clearer than just holding the earbud a similar distance away from you. I still need speakers!

  8. melini says:

Ahhm… I don’t think… that’s really the SAME principle. Unless you’re referring to the principle that sound travels. … Just saying.

  9. chadwick says:

Everyone who read this and then proceeded to try said amplification with the nose raise your hand.

It works, not the loudest, but definitely audible.
