I tutor international students in improving their English. One of them told me today that he watches The Office and turns on closed captioning to learn English figures of speech. IMMD.

I have been watching US shows for that purpose since the dawn of movie/tv-show downloads. All Star Treks, 15 seasons of ER, Firefly, House, Spin City, Scrubs, just to name a few… Of course this also means that my originally British English is now hopelessly Americanized. I guess I should pick up some Doctor Who, or the original The Office… Or I could just move to the UK, God knows I’d be better off…

It’s better than learning figures of speak from Ziva on NCIS.

I actually used to do this with my college language classes. Aside from having several foreign language channels (we had a rather large international community on campus), I would sometimes switch the language on my DVDs to try and pick things up.

Granted, I actually preferred instead to watch them in the other language with English captions to acclimate myself to hearing the language and associate it with the words…

This is the way how most of Europe tries to improve their English since the DVD was invented. I do it, my friends do it, everyone I know watches subtitled original versions from time to time.

My German neighbors watched Seinfeld to help them learn English when they moved to the states :-)

I actually don’t even like translated subs under English shows, ’cause I hate how those subs ruin a great joke or pun.

That and it really does improve my English :-)

I’m brazillian and I do that too. My favorite way of watching stuff. Brazilian subs with english voice makes it sound weird and dubbed just ruins it.
