It Made My Day

My 5 yr old asked me why I always say "I hope everyone is ok" whenever we see flashing lights or hear sirens. The next day we were stuck on a busy street behind a mail truck with a flashing light. From the backseat I heard her whisper ‘I hope everyone is ok.’ IMMD

  3. Nana says:

Hey, the mail can be plenty scary! Nice kid you’re raising there. Parsing takes time.

  4. jane says:

i say that too! that’s so adorable :)

Gah! I truly mean no offense to the submitter, but it makes me cringe when people say “I hope everyone is okay.” I think the reason is that it’s such a weak phrase; it’s the minimum possible amount you could care about the situation, like “I care enough to say it aloud, but not enough to ever go and help, and really, I’m just muttering to myself to make noise”… and it’s always said by people who don’t ever do anything except “hope”. It’s such a mindless reaction, too, like saying “bless you” to somebody who sneezes on TV. *yuck*

What would you expect him to do, push the EMT’s out of the way so he can save them himself? How about running the firetruck off the road and going to town with a garden hose? The situation was taken care of as far as it could if the emergency vehicles were responding; that doesn’t mean he can’t feel empathy for the situation, even if he isn’t involved in it. Gah to you, as well.

      • Asia says:

Thank you, Jessica. That was my exact reaction to he or she wrote.

      • Teckenet says:

Erm, no, he’s merely saying that it’s become nothing more than an automatic response and that most people don’t give a toss. Has nothing to do with pushing EMTs out of the way. (And yes, I know that EMTs and firefighters really don’t need a crowd gathered, as crowds can hinder rescue efforts.)

My question is what can’t a 5 year old child figure out the difference between emergency vehicles and a mail truck? This kid not taught that firefighters and EMTs (or in kid language “ambulance drivers”) save people and not know what their trucks look like?

      • Nana says:

I have to agree with Jess, Mojo. Just because a person says a little prayer when they hear a bad thing happening doesn’t mean they don’t do ALL they can WHEN they can. I think you assume too much from a simple heartfelt gesture.

Clarification; I’ve personally been involved in a very serious situation that involved lots of ambulance sirens. When I hope that everyone is ok it’s because I know how far reaching the pain from such an event can get. The sentiment, for me, in my head, is sending good juju to the folks whose lives have changed forever because of the event.

Thanks for those who said supportive things. To others, I think the website you’re looking for is FML.com, trust me, you’ll fit right in!

    You’re kidding me, right?
I swear, some of you people are just ridiculous. It was a sweet moment that she shared with us and you insist on picking it apart, and even insult the intelligence of a FIVE year old?

Get off your high horses and stfu.

    Some people actually have compassion.
Just because a few of you don’t care about another person’s welfare, don’t mean the rest of us are like that.

    People today just sicken me.
