My friend and I got locked out of his car, with his new camera in it. Not wanting to wait 45 minutes for a tow truck or leave the car alone, my friend ran into a dry-cleaners for one of their cheap wire hangers. We straightened it out, slipped it through the car door molding and unlocked it from the inside. We had an audience and a father asked us if we wouldn’t mind teaching his 5 year old son ‘how it’s done’.

“Watch closely Johnny. This is how you do Grand Theft Auto in REAL life.”
Awesome!
You’d better buy a new car with a safer lock. If you can unlock it from the outside, more people can.
Why not teach the 5-year-old the value of carrying a spare key?
When my granddad was alive, he was a well-known locksmith in his area. When any of the grandkids got their driver’s license, as a gift he gave them a lockpicking kit, in the event that they locked their keys out of the car, or if they happened upon anyone who locked their keys in their car. He never gave me one, though.
Learning how to pick your car’s lock should be one of the Top 5 things every car owner should know, right up there with changing a tire, changing oil, changing spark plugs, and changing a battery. I have done all except the oil.
I meant *in their car*…if they locked their keys in their car.
Looks like little Johnny’s got a promising criminal career ahead of him; I love it when parents encourage their kids to develop their natural talents.
I carry a Slim Jim in my truck, for those who lock their keys in their car.
I carry a gun, just for those who dont want to give the keys of their car.
I had to do this with my car a while ago. Although the only reason it worked was because my window was still down about 2mm.
Good god, how old is your car? Is it a classic?
My first one was built in 1990 and wasn’t expensive even then – far, far less so when I bought it, but…
Got locked out once… tried to slim jim it… failed, repeatedly and epically. Called my rescue service and explained, hoping they could maybe come and do it properly – they said they couldn’t help on my level of cover because I wasn’t more than half a mile from home, but it wouldn’t have been any good because the lock mechanism almost certainly had anti-SJ protection, being built after the mid 80s. (Since found that slightly newer models of mine, without any extra protections besides, also had reinforced plates around the actual lock barrel, hardened barrels, etc, to prevent both this and drilling attempts)
Eventually found that I’d also forgotten to lock the rear hatch and could, with a bit of wriggling reach through and pop the button for the driver’s door from the inside. Might be worth investigating if _everything’s_ locked “next time” or if you upgrade… there may still be a way in.
(If it’s got central locking, so not as reliant on physically-connected lock buttons, it _should_ automatically either pop the locks open or refuse to let the driver’s door shut at all if you try to close it up locked without having a key in one of the doors… If not, putting half a tennis ball over the lock and smashing it flat is supposed to somehow work. Pneumatic systems?)
dry cleaners come in handy specially if you need your precious clothes to get cleaned very fast “;*
